Psoriasis Q & A

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a condition of the immune system involving an inflammatory response in your skin. It essentially speeds up the life cycle of your skin cells and causes cells to rapidly build upon the surface of your skin.

T lymphocytes — a subtype of white blood cell — infiltrate your skin and stimulate your skin cells to overproduce. The excess skin cells form itchy and often painful red patches and scales.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

The symptoms of psoriasis vary depending on the individual. Common symptoms include:

  • Silvery scaly skin
  • Pain and soreness
  • Itching and burning
  • Red patches of skin
  • Stiff and swollen joints
  • Thick, pitted, or ridged nails
  • Dry, cracked skin that bleeds easily

Psoriasis patches can vary in size, location, and quantity. When the condition flares up, it usually lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

What causes psoriasis?

There isn’t a known, definitive cause of psoriasis. However, it’s often triggered or exacerbated by certain factors, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Infections
  • Skin injury
  • Chronic stress
  • Certain medications
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Heavy alcohol consumption

If you have a family history of the disease or have a viral or bacterial infection, you’re more likely to develop psoriasis. Obesity and smoking also increase your risk.

What are the treatments for psoriasis?

While there isn’t a cure for psoriasis, there are effective ways to manage symptoms. Psoriasis is considered a chronic disease that comes and goes in flares, so treatments are primarily aimed at stopping or slowing its growth.

After a diagnosis of psoriasis with a physical exam, medical history, and possibly a skin biopsy, there are multiple treatment options available.

Dr. Dang-Vu offers topical treatments as well as systemic therapies, including Otezla, methotrexate, acitretin, cyclosporine; interleukin inhibitors such as Stelara, Tremfya, Cosentyx, Talz, Siliq; and TNF blockers — Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira.
