Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is a photo-rejuvenation treatment that works for many skin conditions. IPL technology uses multiple wavelengths of light to correct sun-damaged skin on the hands, neck, chest, and face.
IPL is a non-invasive and non-ablative treatment that involves the use of precise, high-intensity pulses of light.
IPL can be used to treat:
During your treatment, your Herndon Dermatology specialist applies anesthetic cream around 30-60 minutes before your procedure to make the process more comfortable for you. You wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the light.
Using the IPL handpiece, your Herndon specialist then delivers the pulses of light over your skin. Some patients describe it as a mild, tolerable, stinging sensation that’s similar to a rubber band lightly snapping on your skin.
The treatments typically only take around 20-30 minutes, depending on the treatment area, and most patients require around three to six treatments for optimal results.
The treatments must be spaced about one month apart.
After your IPL treatment, you might experience mild redness of the treatment area, but this should subside within a few days. Some brown spots might even appear darker before peeling off a few days later.
If you’d like, you can apply makeup directly after your treatment.
It’s important that you protect your skin following the procedure and allow it to heal properly. Follow your Herndon skin specialist’s advice and protect your skin with recommended daily sunscreens and sensitive skin cleansers and moisturizers.
After about one week, you can resume your normal skincare routine. The results of IPL are long-lasting, but nothing can stop the aging process, and sun damage can still occur — many patients return for a maintenance touch-up treatment once or twice a year.
