Botox Q & A

How does Botox® work?

Botox is derived from a toxin that’s created by a bacterium — clostridium botulinum. It’s injected in small, diluted amounts into targeted facial muscles. Botox weakens the muscles and blocks the signals that are transmitted from nerves to muscles, reducing wrinkles both shallow and deeper-set.

Botox works well to diminish wrinkles around the eyes and worry or frown lines between the eyebrows, as well as reducing wrinkles on the forehead.

It’s so effective that it’s even been used to treat complications that aren’t aesthetic, such as:

  • Lazy eye
  • Migraines
  • Uncontrollable blinking

Botox only takes a few minutes in the office and no anesthesia is necessary. Dr. Dang-Vu injects the Botox with a fine needle. Some patients might experience mild, tolerable discomfort, but most patients don’t report any discomfort at all.

Who is a good candidate for Botox?

In general, most adults are good candidates for Botox. You’re not a good candidate for Botox if you:

  • Have a neurological disease
  • Are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • Have another underlying medical condition that could be affected by Botox

Some patients with a weakened immune system — due to certain medications or medical conditions — might not be good candidates.

What can I expect after my Botox® treatment?

While most people don’t experience any symptoms following their treatments, some patients might have mild bruising that resolves within a day.

It’s important that you don’t irritate the treated area for at least 12 hours to give your skin and muscles time to heal and adjust.

It can take up to a week for you to notice the results, but most people notice significant changes within the first few days.

The results can last for up to six months or longer. You might need maintenance treatments at some point in the future since, with time, your muscles return to normal functioning and the wrinkles and lines can begin to reappear. Even when wrinkles re-appear, they don’t usually return to their full prominence.
